Shanghai Nanny Salary Calculator (Free Excel)

Most expat families arrive in Shanghai with a single salary number in mind — usually from a friend's 2022 placement or an internet article from 2019. The market has moved 15–25% since then. This Excel calculator gives you the 2026 band based on your specific situation: which neighborhood, what experience tier, live-in or live-out, bilingual or functional English. It is not magic; it is the same lookup table we use internally when scoping placements, packaged into a single-page sheet.

What the calculator does

The Excel file is a single sheet. You select from four dropdowns:

  • Neighborhood: Former French Concession, Jing'an, Pudong, Hongqiao, Minhang, Xintiandi, or 'other'.
  • Experience tier: entry (1–2 years), mid (3–5 years), senior (6–10 years), or veteran (10+ years).
  • Language ability: Mandarin-only, functional English, fluent bilingual.
  • Role structure: live-in, live-out, part-time hourly.

The sheet returns: monthly base salary band (low / mid / high), estimated 13th-month bonus, Chinese New Year red envelope estimate, food and board valuation for live-in, annual training budget, and a 12-month all-in total in both ¥ RMB and USD.

The bands are derived from the same data feeding our salary bands article — calibrated against actual 2026 placements we and partner agencies have worked on.

Inputs explained

Neighborhood matters because supply pressure differs across districts. FFC and Hongqiao carry premiums; Minhang and Pudong sit closer to the citywide median.

Experience tier matters because tenure compounds salary expectation. A veteran candidate doesn't just have more skill; she has options. Underpaying her by 15% versus market means she leaves at month 9 for a better offer.

Language ability is the single biggest non-experience modifier. Fluent bilingual carries a 30–50% premium on top of the experience band. Functional English is a 10–15% modifier. Mandarin-only is the base.

Role structure changes the calculation entirely. Live-in includes food and board valuation (~¥ 1,500–2,500/month typical); live-out does not. Part-time hourly bypasses the monthly framework entirely.

Outputs explained

The calculator returns four numbers per scenario:

  • Monthly base salary band (low / mid / high) — what the cash salary lands at.
  • 13th-month bonus — typically equal to one month's salary, paid in early January.
  • Chinese New Year red envelope — separate from 13th-month, typically ¥ 1,000–2,500, customary.
  • Annual all-in — the cash salary plus bonuses plus food/board valuation plus training and gift budget. This is the number to compare against your relocation-package allowance.

The USD conversion uses a fixed 7.20 ¥/USD rate baked into the sheet (you can override). Updating to current rate is a one-cell change.

How the bands were derived

The bands are calibrated against actual 2026 placements across our partner-agency network — approximately 200 placement-quotes per quarter across the major districts. We also cross-check against the published bands from 2–3 larger Shanghai agencies and adjust quarterly.

The bands are tight enough to be useful but wide enough to honestly reflect that any given placement may land outside the median. Bilingual-fluent veteran candidates in FFC may exceed the upper band; entry-tier candidates in Minhang may settle below the lower band. The calculator gives you the realistic center of mass — not the absolute extremes.

Frequently asked

Common questions

How accurate are the bands?
Calibrated against `~200` placement quotes per quarter from our partner-agency network. Accurate within `±10%` for the median case; outlier placements may sit beyond. The band is meant to set expectations, not promise a specific number.
Do the bands update for 2027?
Yes — we refresh the underlying data quarterly. The downloadable file is the `2026` version; users who provided email get the `2027` version automatically when it's published.
Can I use this for Beijing or Hong Kong?
No. The bands are Shanghai-specific. Beijing runs `~10%` below Shanghai for equivalent profiles; Hong Kong has a different domestic-helper system entirely. Don't use this calculator for either.
Is there a Google Sheets version?
The Excel file opens in Google Sheets with `~2` minor formula tweaks. We don't maintain a separate native Sheets version.
Why isn't there a yuesao tab?
Yuesao pricing is structurally different (`30`-day window, gold/silver/bronze tiering, postnatal-specific). It deserves its own calculator and we'll publish one separately. For now, the [yuesao service page](/services/newborn-yuesao-night-nurse/) has the bands.
